Tea, Ayurveda & Ocean Wellness

Ceylon Soul

Fewer places, longer in each, and a doctor-led Ayurvedic programme rather than a spa menu — built so that the resting actually happens.

  • 8 nights / 9 days
  • Gentle
  • Best November to April

FromUS$3,750per person sharing a double or twin room · excludes international flights

This is the shortest of our three flagship journeys and the one that covers the least ground, which is the entire point. Eight nights across four places, two of them for two nights and one for a full three — because the most common piece of feedback we get about Sri Lankan itineraries is that they were wonderful and slightly too full.

The Ayurveda here is the real thing rather than the marketing version. A resident physician consults before anything is prescribed, the programme changes based on that consultation, and diet is part of the treatment. That last point matters: during a proper course, alcohol is generally out and the food is decided for you. We would rather tell you that now than have you discover it on day six.

Around it: a night in Kandy for the temple, two in tea country at altitude where the air is cold and clean, and a long finish on the quiet south-east coast at Tangalle, which is where the beaches stop being busy.

Day by day

How the journey moves

A starting point rather than a fixed schedule — every day here can be lengthened, shortened or swapped.

  1. Colombo1n
  2. Kandy1n
  3. Tea Country2n
  4. Galle2n
  5. Tangalle2n
  1. Day 1

    Colombo

    Arrive, and sleep

Met at the airport and driven into the city. Nothing is scheduled, deliberately — this itinerary is about arriving properly rather than starting immediately, and that begins on the first day.

    City hotel with a pool

    1 hour from the airport

  2. Day 2

    Kandy

    Up to the last kingdom

North-east into the hills, with the air cooling as you climb. One night here, timed around the evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth — drums in the corridor, and a queue of people who are unambiguously there to worship rather than to look.

    • Evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth

    Hillside hotel above Kandy lake

    3 hours

  3. Day 3

    Tea Country

    Into the tea

The road climbs through Ramboda into high-grown country. We stop at a working estate — the plucking, the withering lofts, the rollers — and then arrive at a bungalow with the gardens starting at the edge of the lawn. At this altitude the nights are genuinely cold and the fireplaces are not decorative.

    • A working tea estate and factory
    • The climb through Ramboda

    Colonial estate bungalow

    4 hours

  4. Day 4

    Tea Country

A day that is not scheduled

The kind of day this itinerary exists to make room for. Walk in the estate, sit by a fire, read. If you want something, there is a guided walk through the plantations, the train down to Ella and back, or Horton Plains at five-thirty in the morning. If you do not, there is nothing you are missing.

    • Optional estate walk with a manager
    • Optional Horton Plains and World's End

    Colonial estate bungalow

  5. Day 5

    Galle

Off the escarpment to the coast

The long descent from the highlands to the southern plain, then west to Galle. Arrive with the afternoon left for the rampart walk — start at the lighthouse, go anticlockwise, and be at Flag Rock as the light goes.

    • The rampart circuit at sunset

    Merchant house inside Galle Fort

    5 hours

  6. Day 6

    Galle

    Inside the walls

A free day in the Fort. Four hundred houses inside seventeenth-century Dutch ramparts, a church floored with the gravestones of colonial officials, galleries in old warehouses, and a working lighthouse. It is a neighbourhood rather than a monument, and the best way to use it is slowly.

    Merchant house inside Galle Fort

  7. Day 7

    Tangalle

East to the quiet coast, and the consultation

An hour and a half east to where the south coast empties out. Tangalle has wide beaches and very little on them. Today is the Ayurvedic consultation — a resident physician takes a history, reads the pulse, and prescribes a programme for the days you have. What follows is decided then rather than booked in advance, which is the difference between Ayurveda and a spa.

    • Consultation with a resident Ayurvedic physician
    • The first treatments

Ayurvedic retreat or beach villa at Tangalle

    1.5 hours

  8. Day 8

    Tangalle

    Treatment, and the sea

Treatments morning and afternoon, with the beach between them. In the evening, if the season is right, Rekawa is twenty minutes away — green turtles come ashore at night to lay, watched under red light by a conservation project rather than displayed at a hatchery.

    • Ayurvedic treatments
    • Optional turtle nesting at Rekawa

Ayurvedic retreat or beach villa at Tangalle

  9. Day 9

    Tangalle to the airport

    The road back

The southern expressway makes the airport about three and a half hours from Tangalle. For the very late departures that most long-haul flights out of Colombo involve, we will usually arrange a day room rather than have you sit in the terminal.

    3.5 hours to the airport

Want this route, but not exactly these dates or this pace?

That is the normal request. Ceylon Soul is a starting point — we move nights between places, change where you sleep, and add or drop days. Tell us what you would change.

Where you stay

Estate bungalows, a Fort merchant house and a dedicated Ayurvedic retreat

The Tangalle property is chosen on one criterion above all others: a resident doctor who consults before prescribing. A great many Sri Lankan hotels offer an Ayurvedic treatment list bookable online in advance, which is a spa menu wearing the vocabulary. We use a small number of places that do it properly, and their rooms are simpler than a resort of equivalent price.

  • A hillside hotel above Kandy

    Kandy

Above the town noise, with a short drive down for the evening ceremony.

  • A colonial estate bungalow

    Tea country

Six rooms, fireplaces, a resident cook and tea gardens at the edge of the lawn.

  • A merchant house inside Galle Fort

    Galle

Deep verandahs and a courtyard on a street inside the ramparts.

  • An Ayurvedic retreat at Tangalle

    Tangalle

Resident physician, prescribed diet, treatment pavilions open to the garden. Simple rooms, and the sea a short walk away.

Getting around

A private air-conditioned car, exclusively yours for the journey

One chauffeur-guide throughout. On this itinerary they do rather less driving than on the others and rather more waiting, which suits a guide who is comfortable with an unscheduled day rather than one who wants to fill it.

The longest drive is day five, off the escarpment to the coast, at about five hours. Everything else is short. This is the gentlest of our three flagship itineraries by a considerable margin.

  • The Ella train, optional

Can be added on the free day in tea country — down to Ella and back by road, or one way with the vehicle meeting you.

Pricing

FromUS$3,750per person sharing a double or twin room

The from price includes the Ayurvedic consultation and a prescribed programme across the Tangalle nights, plus half board in tea country and full board at the retreat — so it covers more meals than the other two itineraries. A longer course means more nights rather than a higher nightly rate.

International flights are not included. We do not book them, and you will almost always do better arranging them yourself. Everything from arrival at Colombo airport onward is covered.

What moves the number

  • 01Length of the Ayurvedic programme. Two nights is an introduction; a genuine panchakarma course needs fourteen to twenty-one.
  • 02Season, with December to March carrying peak rates on the south coast.
  • 03Whether you want the estate bungalow exclusively, which some couples do.
  • 04Party size, and single occupancy supplements at the retreat.

Seasons

December to April
Dry and calm on the south coast. The reliable window, and the busiest.
May to September
South-west monsoon on this coast. We would move the beach half east to Tangalle proper or suggest different dates.

Worth adding

Related experiences

Things we would suggest folding in, and the ones people most often do.

Extend the Ayurvedic course

Adding seven to twelve nights at the retreat turns an introduction into a genuine panchakarma programme. The most common change people make to this itinerary.

Horton Plains and World's End

A five-thirty start from tea country for the most unusual landscape on the island, when the weather is clear.

Turtle nesting at Rekawa

Twenty minutes from Tangalle. Conservation-run, red light only, and entirely unlike a hatchery.

A private dinner on the Galle ramparts

Inside the Fort with the sea on three sides. Frequently requested for anniversaries.

Questions

About Ceylon Soul

As an introduction, yes — a consultation and a prescribed programme over two days is a genuine experience of it. As a course, no. Panchakarma properly needs fourteen to twenty-one nights, and if that is what you want we will build a different itinerary around a single retreat rather than this one.
