Sri Lanka in October: where to go and what to book first
October is shoulder season, not a washout. Start inland, plan the mornings and keep the coast flexible, and it is one of the island's quieter, greener months.

October is a good month for Sri Lanka if you plan around the afternoon rather than the forecast. It falls in the second inter-monsoon, so showers can reach any part of the island, usually after lunch. Mornings tend to be clear, the big sites are quieter than in peak season, and the dry zone and hill country carry the trip.
What October is not is a dependable beach month. If the sea is the point of your holiday, the south coast settles from December. If the sea is a bonus, October works well, provided the coast comes last and nothing depends on it.
Is October a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, for the right kind of trip. October sits between the two monsoons and well before the December rush, which makes it shoulder season in every sense. The trade is simple: you give up certainty on the beach, and in return you get quieter sites, greener hills and a better choice of rooms.
What October does well
- Quiet at the big sites. Sigiriya, Dambulla's cave temples and the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy are far quieter than between December and March.
- Mornings. The inter-monsoon tends to leave them clear, and mornings are when you should be climbing, walking and driving anyway.
- The hill country. Tea country is at its greenest after the south-west monsoon, and the afternoon cloud in the valleys is part of the view.
- Room choice. Small hotels have space, so you choose the room instead of taking what is left.
- Treatment-led stays. A doctor-led Ayurvedic programme does not care much about the sea state.
What October does not do well: guaranteed beach days, whale watching, long hikes with no fallback, and any itinerary that needs every day to go to plan.
What the weather actually does in October
October and November make up the second inter-monsoon, and between them they bring around 30 per cent of Sri Lanka's annual rainfall. Unlike the two monsoons, which favour one coast over the other, this rain can fall anywhere. It usually arrives as afternoon or evening thunderstorms, often building over the hills first.
This year has an extra wrinkle. The Department of Meteorology has warned that October and November 2026 could be wetter than usual because of El Niño, yet the dry zone went into October in drought, which is why two of Yala's blocks closed in September. Both can be true in the same week: dust at the park gate at dawn, thunder over Kandy by four.
So we plan October days in two halves:
- Before lunch: climbs, walks, game drives and long transfers.
- After lunch: temples, a tea factory, a cooking lesson, a long lunch, or nothing at all.
- In the hills: morning mist, afternoon cloud and properly cool nights in Nuwara Eliya, at about 1,900 metres.
- On the coast: the sea is a daily decision, not a booking.
October does not punish travellers who get up early. It punishes itineraries with no spare day.

Where to go in October
Put the dry zone and the hills at the centre of the trip and keep the coast flexible. This is roughly how we read the island this month.
The Cultural Triangle is the most dependable part of an October trip. Climb Sigiriya when the gates open and you are usually down before the heat and the cloud build. In a dry year like this one, the elephant gathering on the Minneriya grasslands, which normally peaks in September, can run into October; the rains end it.
Kandy and the tea estates suit slow days: estate walks in the morning, a factory visit when the rain arrives. We would not plan a multi-day trek in the Knuckles this month, because the trails are wet and the leeches are enthusiastic. Ella works better as a stop than a base.
Yala and Udawalawe both work in October if you are at the gate when it opens. Udawalawe remains the more reliable park for elephants, in this month as in any other.
Can you still have a beach holiday in October?
Not a dependable one. On the south and west coasts, seas are often rough and showers are frequent, so a week of swimming is a gamble you will probably lose for part of the week. If the coast matters, make it the last leg, keep it short, and choose somewhere you would happily spend a wet afternoon.
That is why we send most October travellers to Galle rather than a beach-only stop: the Fort is a town, not a view, and it is as good in the rain as in the sun. Mirissa is between whale seasons; the main season off the south coast runs from about November to April.
On the east coast, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are at the tail of their season, better early in the month than late. We give both the honest treatment in Trincomalee in October and Arugam Bay in October.
Dates and changes for October 2026
Six things to check before you fix a route.
- Until 15 October: Blocks 1 and 2 of Yala National Park, the busiest, are closed because of drought. The park's other blocks stay open, and we plan around the reopening rather than assume it.
- All month: the hill country railway runs between Nanu Oya and Badulla, via Ella, but not between Kandy and Nanu Oya, which is still being repaired after Cyclone Ditwah. We drive guests from Kandy into tea country and put them on the train at Nanu Oya, with the car waiting in Ella.
- Sunday 25 October: Vap Poya, the full moon that ends Vas, the monks' three-month rains retreat. Alcohol and meat are not sold and temples fill with families in white. It is a fine day to visit one and a poor evening for a celebration dinner.
- In the month after Vap Poya: the Kathina season, when temples offer new robes to their monks. If your driver-guide hears of a ceremony near your route, it is worth the detour.
- Sunday 8 November: Deepavali, a public holiday, if your trip runs into November.
- Before you fly: since 25 May 2026, visitors from 40 countries, including the UK, the US and Australia, receive a free 30-day ETA. You still have to apply online; the details are in Sri Lanka visa in 2026.
What to book first
In October, book in the order that protects your flexibility.
- 01A private vehicle and driver-guide. The ability to swap two days is worth more this month than any single hotel, and it only works when the car is yours.
- 02The dry-zone and hill-country hotels. Two or three nights each; these carry the trip, so they come first.
- 03Your game drives. Mornings first, in the park or block that fits your dates.
- 04Train seats from Nanu Oya. Reserve as early as your dates allow, and keep the car as the fallback.
- 05The coast, last. Refundable where possible, and good enough to enjoy on a wet day.
A ten-night October route
This is the shape we come back to most often for a first visit in October.
- 01Nights 1 to 3: the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya at opening, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa or the elephants at Minneriya. Three nights absorbs the long arrival drive.
- 02Nights 4 to 6: Kandy and tea country. Kandy on the way up, then estate walks and the train from Nanu Oya to Ella.
- 03Nights 7 and 8: Yala or Udawalawe. Two game drives at the very least; the park depends on your dates.
- 04Nights 9 and 10: Galle. The Fort, the ramparts at dusk, and the sea if it agrees.
It follows our Ceylon Icons journey, adjusted for the month: the coast moves to the end and gets Galle rather than a beach-only stay. In the first half of October, while Yala's main blocks are closed and the east is still in season, you can put two nights in Trincomalee after the Cultural Triangle instead of the safari. With only a week, drop the coast entirely and give the hills an extra night.
If rest is the point of the trip, Ceylon Soul builds it around a doctor-led Ayurvedic programme, which is one plan October's weather cannot spoil.
Who October suits
October suits travellers who like a plan but do not need it to hold perfectly.
- First-time visitors who care more about Sigiriya, temples and tea than about a tan.
- Couples who want variety and do not mind a thunderstorm with dinner.
- Photographers who want wet greenery, heavy skies and fewer people in the frame.
- Wellness travellers, for whom the weather barely matters.
- Flexible travellers happy to swap a day when the sky says so.
It suits less well if you want a beach-only holiday, if your group needs every day fixed in advance, or if whales are the reason you are coming. For those, November is a step closer and December is the answer.
If October is your month, tell us your dates and what matters most. We will build the route around the mornings, tell you which day to keep spare, and tell you honestly whether the coast is worth it. Plan my Sri Lanka trip.

Questions
What people ask us
Yes, for a trip built around culture, tea country and wildlife rather than the beach. October is the second inter-monsoon, so showers can fall anywhere, usually in the afternoon. Plan sightseeing for the morning, keep one day spare, and it is a quieter, greener month than peak season.
The Cultural Triangle, around Sigiriya and Dambulla, is the most dependable, followed by Kandy and the tea country. The national parks work well with early starts. The south and west coasts are the least reliable for the sea, and the east coast is at the end of its season.
Not a dependable one. Seas on the south and west coasts are often rough and showers are frequent; Trincomalee is the better bet early in the month. Treat the beach as the last, flexible leg of a wider trip, and choose a base such as Galle that still works on a wet day.
Partly. Blocks 1 and 2, the busiest, are closed because of drought until 15 October 2026, while the park's other blocks remain open. Check the reopening before you fix your dates. For elephants, Udawalawe is a reliable alternative.
Partly. Trains run between Nanu Oya and Badulla via Ella, the most scenic section, but the line between Kandy and Nanu Oya is still being repaired after Cyclone Ditwah. Travel from Kandy to Nanu Oya by road and take the train from there.
