Ella sits in a notch in the escarpment where the highlands break and fall away to the coastal plain. On a clear morning you can see all the way to the sea, seventy kilometres south, through a V-shaped gap in the hills that gives the town its one indispensable view.
Twenty years ago it was a few guesthouses. The train, the Nine Arch Bridge and a great deal of social media have since turned it into the busiest small town in the interior, with a main street of banana-pancake cafés that would not be out of place in northern Thailand. Whether that ruins it depends entirely on when you get up.
The walking is the reason to stay. Little Adam's Peak is a gentle forty-five minutes through tea. Ella Rock is a proper two-hour scramble that most people attempt without a guide and a reliable number get lost on.

The train in
The Kandy to Ella line is genuinely one of the great railway journeys — six or seven hours through tea terraces, cloud forest and tunnels, with the doors open.

Walkable country
Unusually for Sri Lanka, you can walk out of your accommodation and be in tea fields within ten minutes, without a vehicle and without a guide.

The gap
The view south through Ella Gap at first light, before the haze builds, is the single image people take away from the hill country.
One caveat
By nine in the morning the Nine Arch Bridge has a hundred people on it queuing to photograph each other, and the main street is not why you came to Sri Lanka. Everything good about Ella happens before eight or after five.

The blue train from Nanu Oya or Kandy
Book a reserved seat in second class and sit on the right-hand side coming down. The unreserved carriages are an experience of a different and more crowded kind.
Little Adam's Peak at sunrise
Forty-five minutes up through tea, and almost empty at six in the morning. The same walk at ten is a procession.
Nine Arch Bridge, early
A Colonial-era viaduct built without steel during a wartime shortage. Get there for the first train and you will have it more or less to yourself.
Ella Rock with a guide
Two hours each way on unmarked paths through tea and forest, with a genuine summit at the end. The guide is not optional — the route is easy to lose.

The practical part

Two nights gives you two dawns, which is really what you are here for. One night means choosing between the bridge and the peak.
- Best time to visit
January to March, and June to September
Ella sits between the two monsoon systems and catches something from both. Mornings are clearest in the first quarter of the year; the light in the gap is best in the hour after sunrise in any month.
When not to come. October and November, when cloud sits in the gap for days at a time and the view — the whole reason for the town — simply is not there.
Travel tips

Reserved train seats sell out weeks ahead in high season. We book them as soon as your dates are fixed.

Do the bridge and the peak at dawn. This is not a nicety; it is the difference between the place being lovely and being a queue.

Take a guide up Ella Rock. Several people get lost on it every week and the paths are neither marked nor obvious.

Leeches appear on the forest sections after rain. Socks and a little salt deal with them.

About Ella
Nanu Oya to Ella is the scenic heart of it and takes about three hours. Kandy to Ella is the full run at six or seven hours, which is wonderful the first time and long if you have small children.
The main street, yes, frankly. The tea fields fifteen minutes out of it are not, and neither is anything before eight in the morning. We tend to place people just outside the town for exactly this reason.
Yes — Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge are both walkable from the town, and can be linked in one morning loop of about three hours.
