Nuwara Eliya in December: is it worth it, and which half of the month to choose

December is when the hills turn from wet to dry. The first half is cloudy and quiet, the second clearer, colder and full, and the Adam's Peak season opens on 23 December.

Nuwara Eliya in December is worth it if you come for tea country, cold nights and a slower pace rather than guaranteed views. It is the month the hills turn from wet to dry: the first half is still cloudy, the second clearer but busy over Christmas. Pack a proper warm layer; nights fall into single figures.

Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 metres, in the middle of tea country, and in December it feels further from the beach than at any other time of year. Fires are lit in the old hotels, mist sits in the valleys until mid-morning, and the coast below is just starting its season. The trick is knowing which week you are booking.

Is Nuwara Eliya worth visiting in December?

Yes, with conditions. December is a transition month in the hills. The heaviest rain of the year, in October and November, is easing, and the clearest months, January to March, are just ahead.

What December does well

  • Cold, properly. Crisp mornings, cold nights and a fire in the evening; the most un-tropical week of a Sri Lankan trip.
  • Green. After two wet months, the tea is at its brightest.
  • The second half of the month. Skies clear noticeably towards Christmas, and the mornings get better.
  • Adam's Peak. The pilgrim season opens on 23 December, and the climb is within reach.
  • A good pairing with the coast. December is the start of the south coast's season, so the hills and the beach work in the same trip.

What December does not do well: guaranteed views from Horton Plains, quiet hotels over Christmas and New Year, and travellers who have packed only for the tropics.

What the weather does in December

December is still the third-wettest month in Nuwara Eliya, after October and November, with around 210 millimetres of rain on average. January brings about half that. Sunshine follows the same curve: around four and a half hours a day in December, rising to five and a half in January.

The rain falls mostly as afternoon cloud and showers rather than all-day downpours, and it eases as the month goes on. The north-east monsoon is now arriving from the other side of the island, so the eastern slopes of the hills, around Walapane and Hanguranketha, can see heavy rain even when Nuwara Eliya itself is merely damp.

The cold is the part people underestimate. Mornings typically start around ten degrees, the coldest nights of the month can drop close to freezing, and the occasional ground frost appears on the grass by January. Most hotels have no heating beyond a fireplace.

So we plan December days like this:

  • First thing: Horton Plains, estate walks and anything that depends on a view.
  • Late morning: a tea factory, the gardens, or the drive to your next stop.
  • Afternoon: expect cloud, and plan something under a roof.
  • Evening: a fire, an early dinner, and every warm layer you brought.

In December, Nuwara Eliya is not a view you are guaranteed. It is a climate you are guaranteed, and that is the point.

Early December or late December?

Early December is the tail of the wet season. Expect more cloud, more afternoon rain and fewer people, with good rates and easy rooms. It suits travellers who want quiet and do not mind trading a few views for it.

Late December is clearer and colder, and much busier. From around 20 December, Sri Lankan families on their school holidays and visitors from abroad fill the hill country for Christmas and New Year, and the best rooms go months ahead. It suits travellers who book early and want the better weather.

If Horton Plains matters most to you, choose the second half. If peace matters most, choose the first.

What to do in Nuwara Eliya in December

  • A working estate and factory. Walk the fields early, then watch the withering, rolling and drying, and taste the result. Pedro Estate is the closest to town.
  • Horton Plains at dawn. Leave around half past five to reach World's End before the cloud comes up the escarpment. Check the park is open the night before, as it can close briefly in heavy weather.
  • Lake Gregory and Victoria Park. Gentle mornings in town; Victoria Park is good for birds in the cool season.
  • The golf club. Laid out in 1889 and one of the oldest in Asia. Visitors are welcome with a booked tee time.
  • Hakgala Botanical Garden. Terraced gardens on the road east of town, quieter and cooler than the gardens at Peradeniya.
  • The train down to Ella. The stretch from Nanu Oya to Ella is running, and it is the most beautiful section of railway in the country.

Adam's Peak, from 23 December

The pilgrim season on Adam's Peak, or Sri Pada, opens with Unduvap Poya, which falls on Wednesday 23 December 2026, and runs until Vesak in May. Pilgrims climb through the night to reach the summit for sunrise, and the path is lit and lined with tea stalls for the whole season.

From Nuwara Eliya, the usual approach is by road to Hatton and on to Dalhousie at the foot of the mountain, a drive of a few hours. The Hatton road to Sri Pada was repaired after the cyclone and reopened in January 2026.

Two pieces of advice. Avoid the opening night and the Poya and weekend nights that follow, when the path is shoulder to shoulder from bottom to top. And take more warm clothing than you think you need: the summit before dawn is the coldest place you will stand in Sri Lanka.

Getting there in December

By road is the straightforward answer. Your driver will choose between the Hatton road and the Kandy road on the day, depending on the weather; we explain both in Colombo to Nuwara Eliya. In December, we still drive the hill roads in the morning and avoid them after dark.

The train from Colombo cannot reach Nanu Oya at the moment, because the line between Gampola and Nanu Oya is still being repaired. It was expected back around the turn of the year, so check before you plan around it. For the onward journey, the train from Nanu Oya to Ella is running, and booking it is covered in Sri Lanka train tickets.

In the winter season, Cinnamon Air also runs scheduled flights from the international airport to the Castlereagh reservoir near Hatton, about an hour and a half by road from Nuwara Eliya.

Dates and changes for December 2026

  • Since 1 November: the winter season for scheduled domestic flights, including Castlereagh.
  • Early December: the tail of the wet season. Expect afternoon cloud and showers.
  • Wednesday 23 December: Unduvap Full Moon Poya, a public holiday, and the opening of the Adam's Peak pilgrim season. Alcohol and meat are not sold.
  • Friday 25 December: Christmas Day. The hill country is at its fullest from around 20 December to New Year.
  • Thursday 31 December: New Year's Eve, with hotels fully booked well in advance.
  • Around the turn of the year: the hill railway between Gampola and Nanu Oya was expected to reopen.
  • December to February: the Department of Meteorology expects El Niño's effects to strengthen through these months, so keep an eye on the forecast.

What to book first

  1. 01Your Christmas-week room, if your dates touch 20 December to New Year. Estate bungalows have very few rooms and go first.
  2. 02A car and driver, so the road can change with the weather.
  3. 03Train seats from Nanu Oya to Ella, on the day the 30-day window opens.
  4. 04Horton Plains, as an early start on your clearest day.
  5. 05Adam's Peak, if you want it, on a weekday night after the opening week.

A December route

  1. 01Nights 1 to 3: the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya at opening, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura.
  2. 02Nights 4 to 6: Kandy and tea country. Kandy on the way up, then two nights near Nuwara Eliya, with Horton Plains at dawn.
  3. 03Nights 7 and 8: Ella or Yala. The train from Nanu Oya to Ella, then down into the dry zone.
  4. 04Nights 9 and 10: the south coast. December is the start of the season there; finish in Galle or by the sea at Mirissa.

This is the shape of our Ceylon Icons journey, and December is a good month for it: cold hills, then a warm coast. For the whole island month by month, see Sri Lanka in December.

Who December in Nuwara Eliya suits

  • Travellers who want a real change of climate from the coast, fire and all.
  • Walkers and photographers willing to get up early for the views.
  • Families on a Christmas trip, if the room is booked early.
  • Anyone set on climbing Adam's Peak in the first weeks of the season.

Less suited: travellers who need guaranteed views, anyone who hates the cold, and last-minute bookers over Christmas and New Year.

If December is your month, tell us your dates. We will tell you honestly which half of the month suits what you want, and put you on an estate with a fire rather than in the busiest part of town. Plan my Sri Lanka trip.
