Arugam Bay in November: why we would wait, and what to do if you cannot
November is the start of Arugam Bay's off-season. The point goes quiet, much of the town closes and the east coast gets its rain. Here is the honest picture, and where to surf instead.

For most travellers, Arugam Bay in November is not worth a special journey. The surf season has ended, the north-east monsoon brings rain and unsettled seas to the east coast, and many guesthouses, cafés and surf shops close until the new season. If you are already on the east coast and flexible, a quiet night or two can still work.
We would rather tell you that now than after a seven-hour drive. Arugam Bay is a summer place, and it rewards being visited in summer. In November, the same time and money buy a far better beach on the south coast, where the season is just beginning.
Is Arugam Bay worth visiting in November?
Rarely, as a destination in its own right. The surf season here runs from roughly April to October, with the most consistent waves between June and September, and by November it is over. The town's rhythm follows the surf, so when the waves go, much of the town goes with them.
What November does well
- Quiet. The beach road is empty, and the rooms that stay open are easy to find.
- Green. The lagoons and paddy around Pottuvil fill up and turn bright after the first rains.
- The lagoon. A boat through the Pottuvil mangroves works in most weather.
- The odd clean morning. Early in the month, experienced surfers can still find a rideable day.
What November does not do well: reliable surf, beginner lessons, a lively town, dependable safaris and boat trips, and dry afternoons.
What the weather and the sea do in November
November is when the north-east monsoon reaches the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms become frequent, the wind shifts, and the sea that was tidy all summer turns choppy and unpredictable. On this side of the island, November and December are usually the wettest months of the year.
It is also the month when depressions and occasional cyclones form in the Bay of Bengal. When one passes close to Sri Lanka, the east coast takes the brunt: days of heavy rain, flooded roads and national parks closed until it clears. That is what happened in late November 2025, when Cyclone Ditwah closed parks across the island.
This year may be wetter than usual. The Department of Meteorology has warned that El Niño could bring above-average rain in October and November 2026. We explain the wider pattern in Sri Lanka's second inter-monsoon.
Arugam Bay in November is not a bad place. It is a summer town, out of season.
What happens to the surf
Main Point, the long right-hander the bay is famous for, needs a decent swell and the summer wind to work properly. By November it rarely has either. The gentler breaks, Whiskey Point to the north and Peanut Farm to the south, can still produce small, mixed waves on some days, but most surf schools have wound down or packed up.
If you are an experienced surfer already in the area, check conditions each morning and you may find a session or two in early November. If you are a beginner, or flying a long way to surf, November in Arugam Bay is the wrong plan.
The good news is that the surf does not stop; it moves. As the east coast season ends, the south coast season begins, and from November the bays around Weligama and Hiriketiya start to work. Weligama, in particular, is one of the best places on the island to learn. The whale boats off Mirissa start their season at the same time, and we explain what to expect in Mirissa whale watching season.
What stays open
Arugam Bay's off-season runs roughly from November to March, and many places close at the end of October. Some guesthouses and a few cafés stay open for travellers and local trade, but the choice shrinks, and what is listed online is not always what is open on the day.
If you are going, book a room in advance and confirm by message the week before that the place will be open. Pottuvil, the town just north of the bay, is a largely Muslim town; dress modestly when you leave the beach, and expect it to be quieter on Friday lunchtimes.
If you go anyway
The bay has more around it than surf, and November is the month to use it.
- Pottuvil Lagoon. A slow boat through the mangroves, with birds, monitor lizards and often crocodiles. The water is calm, so it works in most weather.
- Kudumbigala. An ancient forest hermitage of rock caves and small stupas, south of the bay. Climb the rock for a view over the jungle to the sea, and dress respectfully.
- Muhudu Maha Viharaya. A small, peaceful Buddhist temple right on the beach at Pottuvil.
- Lahugala. A small park inland where elephants gather around the tanks in the dry season. After the rains they disperse, so sightings in November are much less reliable.
- Kumana. Wild, quiet and excellent for birds. Check that it is open before you go, as parks here close at short notice in heavy weather.
If the weather turns for good, head inland rather than north. Ella is three to four hours away by road, and Trincomalee and the north-east coast are entering their own wet season, so they are no escape in November.
A note on security
In October 2024, several governments warned their citizens about a threat to tourists in Arugam Bay. The advisories were lifted within weeks, after the police stepped up security in the area. Since then, the police and the Special Task Force have kept a visible security presence in Arugam Bay and the other main tourist areas.
We continue to take guests there in season. Check your own government's travel advice before you go, as you would anywhere, and report any concern to the Sri Lanka Police tourist hotline, 1997.
Dates and changes for November 2026
- From 1 November: the winter season for scheduled domestic flights, which serve the south coast and the hills, not the east. Ampara, the nearest airport to Arugam Bay, is charter only.
- Sunday 8 November: Deepavali, a public holiday, celebrated in the Tamil towns and villages of the east.
- Tuesday 24 November: Il Full Moon Poya, a public holiday. Alcohol is not sold.
- Late November: the most likely time for a Bay of Bengal system, and for national parks to close temporarily in heavy weather.
- Around April 2027: the new surf season begins, and the town reopens.
What to do instead
Three plans we would rather sell you than a November week in Arugam Bay:
- 01Surf the south coast. Base yourself near Weligama or Hiriketiya, learn or surf every morning, and see the whales off Mirissa while you are there.
- 02Save Arugam Bay for summer. Come between June and September, when the point works, and pair it with the hills and a park on the way.
- 03Keep the east for October. If your dates can move, the first half of October is the end of the season rather than the start of the off-season; we cover it in Arugam Bay in October.
A November route for surfers
- 01Nights 1 to 3: the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya at opening, with the afternoons left free for the storms.
- 02Nights 4 to 6: Kandy and tea country. Hill roads in the morning, then the train from Nanu Oya to Ella.
- 03Nights 7 and 8: Yala or Udawalawe. Morning game drives, with a spare afternoon for the rain.
- 04Nights 9 to 12: the south coast. Surf every morning around Weligama or Hiriketiya, whales from Mirissa, and Galle on the way back to the airport.
Wild Ceylon is built around two contrasting parks and the whale shelf off the south coast, and it bends easily into this shape. For the full picture of the month across the island, see Sri Lanka in November.
Who November in Arugam Bay suits
- Experienced surfers already in Sri Lanka, happy to gamble on an early-November session.
- Travellers who want genuine quiet and do not mind rain or closed doors.
- Anyone passing through the east on a longer route, for a night or two.
Less suited: beginners, anyone flying in mainly to surf, beach holidays, and travellers who need a lively town or dependable weather.
If you are set on the east coast, tell us your dates and we will tell you honestly whether it will work, and plan the south-coast alternative alongside it so you can choose. Plan my Sri Lanka trip.

Questions
What people ask us
Not usually. Arugam Bay's surf season runs from roughly April to October, and by November swells are smaller, the wind has shifted and most surf schools have wound down. Experienced surfers may find an occasional session early in the month; everyone else is better off on the south coast.
Partly. November is the start of the off-season, which runs roughly to March, and many guesthouses, cafés and surf shops close at the end of October. Some places stay open, so book in advance and confirm the week before that your accommodation will be open.
Wet and unsettled. November is when the north-east monsoon reaches the east coast, bringing frequent showers, thunderstorms and choppy seas. It is also the season for Bay of Bengal storms, which can bring several days of heavy rain and close nearby national parks.
On the south coast. As the east coast season ends, the bays around Weligama and Hiriketiya start to work, and Weligama is one of the best places on the island to learn. You can combine it with whale watching from Mirissa, which also begins its season in November.
Yes. After a security alert in October 2024, which was lifted within weeks, the police and the Special Task Force have kept a visible security presence in Arugam Bay and other tourist areas. Check your own government's travel advice before you go, and report any concern to the police tourist hotline, 1997.
