East Coast

Arugam Bay

A right-hand point break, a single sandy street, and a season that runs exactly opposite to the rest of the country.

  • 3 to 5 nights
  • Best May to September

Arugam Bay is a surf town, and it makes no attempt to be anything else. The Main Point is a long right-hander that peels off the headland at the southern end of the bay, and between May and September it is among the more consistent point breaks in the Indian Ocean. The town behind it is one road, a strip of guesthouses and beach bars, and not much more.

What makes it strategically useful for a traveller has little to do with surfing. The east coast runs on the north-east monsoon, which means it is dry and calm precisely when the south and west are being battered. If your only possible travel window is July or August, this coast — Arugam Bay, or Trincomalee further north — is the answer to a question the rest of the island cannot solve.

Out of season it more or less closes. Boards go away, half the guesthouses shut, and the point is flat.

Why come here

What Arugam Bay is for

  • 01

    The wave

A long, workable right-hand point that holds size, plus a string of other breaks within half an hour for different abilities.

  • 02

    The opposite monsoon

Dry and calm from May to September, when the south-west coast is unusable. This is the single most practical reason to know it exists.

  • 03

    Kumana next door

The national park immediately south is contiguous with Yala but sees a fraction of the vehicles, and is one of the best bird sites in the country.

One caveat

This is a beach-and-surf town with a simple social life and simple accommodation. It is not luxurious, it is a long way from anywhere, and if you do not surf and do not want to lie about, three nights will feel like plenty.

Top experiences

What we would actually do

Not a list of everything possible — the handful of things we put into itineraries, and when.

  • A dawn surf at Main Point

Offshore in the early morning before the wind comes up, and considerably less crowded than mid-morning.

  • Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm

Gentler breaks north and south, better for improvers, and reachable by tuk-tuk in twenty minutes.

  • Kumana National Park

Mangrove lagoons and a huge bird colony in the nesting season, plus elephant and the occasional leopard, without the Yala convoy.

  • Pottuvil lagoon at dusk

A quiet paddle among mangroves and often elephants coming down to the water. Understated and lovely.

Softer alternatives for less experienced surfers.

Mangroves, elephants and a low-key sunset paddle.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya

An ancient stupa half buried in the dunes at Pottuvil.

Travel information

The practical part

Suggested duration

3 to 5 nights

Surfers stay a week. Non-surfers should think in terms of three nights, combined with Kumana and the lagoon.

Best time to visit

May to September

The dry season on the east coast, and the surf season. July and August are the most consistent for waves and the busiest in town.

When not to come. November to February, when the north-east monsoon arrives, the point goes flat and a substantial part of the town simply shuts.

Travel tips

  • 01

It is a long drive from anywhere — around seven hours from Colombo, four from Ella. Break the journey rather than doing it in one push.

  • 02

Book well ahead for July and August; the good places fill months in advance.

  • 03

The point is rocky and shallow at low tide. Reef booties are not overcautious.

  • 04

Kumana is far better in the nesting season from May to July, when the bird colony is active.

Questions

About Arugam Bay

Only really as part of an east-coast trip in the southern monsoon. The bay is pleasant and the wildlife next door is excellent, but the town is built around surfing and it shows.
