Arugam Bay in December: why we would send you south instead, and when to come back
December is the heart of Arugam Bay's off-season: monsoon rain, rough seas, closed cafés and no surf season. Here is what still works if you go, where to surf instead, and when the bay is at its best.

Arugam Bay in December is not worth planning a trip around. It is the heart of the east coast's off-season: the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas, the surf season ended in October and many guesthouses and cafés close until spring. For December sun and surf, go to the south coast instead.
We would rather say that plainly than sell you a quiet week in the rain. Arugam Bay is one of our favourite places in the country from May to September. In December, the island's good weather is simply on the other side of the hills.
Is Arugam Bay worth visiting in December?
For most travellers, no. December falls in the north-east monsoon, which brings its rain to the east coast first and hardest. The point break that made the bay famous is out of season, much of the town is shuttered, and the long drive across the island is hard to justify for a few grey days.
What December does well
- Quiet. The few people you meet are mostly locals.
- The old temples. Muhudu Maha Viharaya on the beach and the forest hermitage at Kudumbigala, on dry mornings.
- Green country. The lagoons and paddy are at their fullest after the rain.
What December does not do well: surf, swimming, beach days, open restaurants, reliable roads after heavy rain, and wildlife at Lahugala, where the elephants scatter once water is everywhere.
What December is really like
The north-east monsoon runs from about December to February, and it is at its wettest in the first weeks. On the east coast, that means heavy, sometimes day-long rain, strong onshore winds and a sea that is rough and often unsafe for swimming. There are bright days too, but you cannot plan around them.
Storms from the Bay of Bengal can make it worse. In late November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah flooded large parts of the east and closed Kumana National Park. This year, the Department of Meteorology expects El Niño's effects to strengthen from December to February, so we will be watching the forecasts closely.
We explain where the rain goes, and where it does not, in Sri Lanka's north-east monsoon.
In December, Arugam Bay is not having a bad season. It is having its off-season, and it takes it seriously.
What is open, and what is not
Arugam Bay runs on its surf season. From November, many of the guesthouses, cafés, bars and surf schools along the main road close or slow right down, and most do not reopen fully until around March or April.
A few hotels and family-run guesthouses stay open all year, and nearby Pottuvil carries on as a normal working town. If you do come, confirm that your hotel will be open and serving meals, carry cash, and expect fewer tuk-tuks and boat operators looking for work.
What still works in December
If you find yourself on the east coast in December, these are worth a dry morning:
- Muhudu Maha Viharaya. An ancient Buddhist site half-buried in the sand at Pottuvil, with the sea just behind it.
- Kudumbigala. A forest hermitage of rock shelters and stupas, quiet and atmospheric. The rock paths are slippery after rain.
- Pottuvil Lagoon. A slow boat through the mangroves, only when the weather is calm.
- Kumana National Park. Migrant birds arrive for the northern winter, but the park is wet, tracks flood, and closures after heavy rain are common. Check before you go.
None of these needs the sea to cooperate, which is why they are the only things we would plan around in December.
Where to surf instead
From about November to April, the surf season moves to the south coast, which sits in its dry season while the east is wet. December is one of its best months.
All three are within easy reach of Galle and Mirissa, so a surf week fits naturally around the Fort and the whale boats. We cover the coast in Galle in December and Colombo to Mirissa.
When to come back
Arugam Bay's season runs from around April or May to October, with the most consistent surf from June to September. April and October are quieter shoulder months, when the bay is opening up or winding down.
We explain how the season ends in Arugam Bay in November, and how to build a summer trip around the east coast in Sri Lanka in September.
Dates and changes for December 2026
- All month: the north-east monsoon's wettest weeks on the east coast. Watch the Met Department's forecasts and any NBRO landslide or flood warnings before travelling.
- From around 20 December: the south coast's busiest weeks begin, so book surf-coast rooms early.
- Wednesday 23 December: Unduvap Full Moon Poya, a public holiday. Alcohol and meat are not sold.
- Friday 25 December: Christmas Day.
- Thursday 31 December: New Year's Eve, busiest on the south coast.
- Kumana National Park: wet-season access depends on flooding. Check before you go.
If you are set on Arugam Bay in December
- 01Book somewhere open all year, and confirm meals are available.
- 02Keep it to two nights, with a fallback plan if the rain settles in.
- 03Travel by day. Roads can flood after heavy rain, and wild elephants often cross the roads around Lahugala after dark.
- 04Carry cash, since many businesses are closed and cash machines are few.
- 05Leave the surfboard at home unless a local tells you otherwise.
A December route that works
- 01Nights 1 to 3: the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya and Dambulla, settling down from mid-December.
- 02Nights 4 to 6: Kandy and tea country. The western hills, drying out as the month goes on, and the train from Nanu Oya to Ella.
- 03Nights 7 and 8: Yala. Down from Ella for two game drives.
- 04Nights 9 to 11: the south coast. Weligama, Ahangama or Hiriketiya for the surf, and Galle for the Fort.
This is our Ceylon Icons journey, turned to finish on the south coast's surf. It is also how we plan at Siri Siri Lanka Traveller, which Mahinsa founded to pair the privacy and comfort of a private journey with real time to slow down.
What to book first
- 01Your south-coast hotel, months ahead for Christmas and New Year.
- 02Surf lessons or a surf guide, in Weligama or Ahangama.
- 03A car and driver for the full route.
- 04Train seats from Nanu Oya to Ella, on the day the 30-day window opens.
- 05Arugam Bay itself, for a future trip between May and September.
Who December in Arugam Bay suits
- Travellers already on the east coast who want a quiet night or two and the old temples.
- Repeat visitors curious to see the bay out of season.
Less suited: almost everyone else, and above all surfers, beach lovers and anyone crossing the island just to get there.
If you were hoping for Arugam Bay this December, tell us your dates. We will move the surf to the south coast, keep the rain on the other side of the hills, and pencil in the east coast for the summer, when it is at its best. Plan my Sri Lanka trip.

Questions
What people ask us
Not usually. December is the heart of the east coast's off-season, with north-east monsoon rain, rough seas and many guesthouses, cafés and surf schools closed until spring. The south coast, around Weligama, Galle and Mirissa, has much better weather in December.
Rarely. Arugam Bay's surf season runs from around April or May to October, and in December the onshore monsoon winds and rough seas make the point unreliable. For December surf, go to the south coast: Weligama for beginners, Midigama and Ahangama for experienced surfers, or Hiriketiya for mixed levels.
Some are, but many close or slow down from November until around March or April. A few hotels and family guesthouses stay open all year, and nearby Pottuvil carries on as a normal town. Confirm your hotel will be open and serving meals before you book.
On the south coast, which has its surf season from about November to April. Weligama is the best place to learn, Midigama and Ahangama have reef and point breaks for experienced surfers, and Hiriketiya is a small bay that suits mixed levels.
From around April or May to October, with the most consistent surf from June to September. April and October are quieter, as the season opens and closes.
