Sri Lanka in December: where to go and what to book first
December is one of the best months for the south and west coasts, and one of the busiest. Here is how to pick the right side of the island and book the parts that sell out.

Sri Lanka in December is a very good bet if you want sunny beaches on the south and west coasts, whale watching off Mirissa and a trip with a bit of festive energy. It is also one of the busiest months of the year. So the honest answer is simple: the weather is on your side as long as you pick the right coast, but the good hotels, drivers and train seats go early.
Is December a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, if you plan around the monsoon. In December the north-east monsoon brings rain to the north and east of the island, while the south and west coasts settle into their dry season. The sea calms down, the beaches open up, and the whale-watching boats start running out of Mirissa.
That makes December a strong month for a first visit that mixes beach time, one or two cultural stops and a little wildlife. It is a weaker month if you want empty beaches and low prices everywhere. You can still find quiet in December, but you have to plan for it.
December is not the month to ask Sri Lanka for privacy everywhere. It is the month to ask the right coast for good weather.
Which side of the island?
- South and west coast: go. Galle, Weligama, Mirissa, Tangalle and Bentota are at or near their best. This is where most December trips should end.
- Hill country: go, with a jacket. Tea country is green and cool. Early December can still be misty and showery, and the mornings get clearer as the month goes on.
- Cultural Triangle: go, but expect some showers. Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa get much of their rain around this time of year. Showers are usually short, the landscape is lush, and early starts get you the best of it.
- East coast: save it for summer. Arugam Bay, Pasikudah and Trincomalee are in their wet season now.
What the weather is really like
On the south-west coast, expect hot, mostly sunny days at around 30°C, with the odd short shower, especially early in the month as the last of the inter-monsoon rain clears. The sea is generally calm enough for swimming at sheltered beaches, but always check the flags and ask locally, because currents can be strong.
Up in Nuwara Eliya and the tea estates, days are mild and nights are properly cold, sometimes in single figures. Pack a warm layer even if the rest of your trip is beachwear.

Dates worth knowing in December 2026
- Wednesday 23 December: Unduvap Full Moon Poya. A public holiday. Alcohol is not sold, and many hotels and restaurants do not serve it, so plan any celebration dinner for another night. In the evening, temples fill with people in white and oil lamps. It is a lovely time to visit one, quietly.
- Adam's Peak season opens. The pilgrimage season to Sri Pada begins on Unduvap Poya and runs until Vesak in May. Night climbs get crowded around weekends and holidays.
- Friday 25 December: Christmas Day. A public holiday. Beach hotels on the south coast make a big occasion of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
- 31 December: New Year's Eve. Parties along the south coast and hotels at their fullest of the whole year.
The best things to do in December
- Blue whales off Mirissa. The season runs from December to April. Go on an early boat, when the sea is calmest, and choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance.
- Sunset in Galle Fort. Walk the ramparts as the light goes, then stay inside the walls for dinner.
- Tea country and the hill-country train. Spend a night or two on an estate, then ride the most scenic stretch of line. Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before departure, and December dates sell out. Our guide to the Kandy to Ella train has the details.
- Leopards in Yala. The park is open and busy over the holidays. Book a private jeep and go at dawn.
- Sigiriya at first light. Be at the gate when it opens, before the heat and the crowds.
What to book first
- 01Your south or west coast hotel. This is the hardest thing to find late in December.
- 02Your driver-guide for the whole trip. The good ones are booked months ahead for the holidays.
- 03Train seats, exactly 30 days before you travel.
- 04Yala jeeps and whale-watching boats, especially for the week between Christmas and New Year.
- 05Festive dinners. Check whether your hotel adds a compulsory gala dinner charge on 24 or 31 December before you pay.

A December route that actually works
For about a week: one night near the airport, two nights on a tea estate, then four or five nights on the south coast, split between Galle and the quieter beaches beyond Weligama. Fit in one whale-watching morning. Galle is around two hours from the airport by expressway, which makes the last day easy.
For twelve to fourteen nights: start in the Cultural Triangle, then Kandy, tea country, two nights near Yala, and a long finish on the south coast. That is roughly the shape of our Ceylon Icons journey, and it works well in December because it ends where the weather is best.
Whatever the length, the rule is the same: fewer places, longer in each. December roads are busier than usual, and an itinerary with a new hotel every night will feel twice as long as it looks on paper.
Who December suits
First-time visitors. The weather logic is easy: pick the coast that is in season and add one inland stop.
Couples. Galle Fort and the quieter south coast make a beautiful pairing. Mirissa is livelier; Tangalle and the coves beyond Weligama are calmer. If it is your honeymoon, see our honeymoon page.
Families. Warm sea, boat trips and pools are easy wins with children. December is busy, so choose a villa or hotel with space rather than a bargain that looks fine online and has nowhere to breathe.

The short version
Sri Lanka in December is at its best when you keep the plan simple: pick the right coast, add one inland detour, and book the popular parts early. Do that and you get one of the island's most satisfying combinations: good weather, a lively atmosphere and enough variety to feel like Sri Lanka rather than just a beach holiday.

Questions
What people ask us
Yes, especially if you focus on the south-west coast. Official Sri Lanka Tourism guidance says that the north-east winds make the south-west coast sunny and the sea calm from November to March, and December sits inside the main whale-watching season. It is a strong month for beaches, but also one of the busiest.
The south-west coast is usually the best choice in December, especially Mirissa, Bentota and Galle. If you also want a cooler inland stop, the hill country works well as a contrast. The east coast is usually not the main priority for a beach-focused December trip.
Yes. Sri Lanka Tourism lists whale and dolphin watching from December through April, and Mirissa is one of the best-known south-coast departure points. Sea conditions still vary from day to day, so it is worth choosing a reputable operator and being realistic about wildlife sightings.
It can be. Sri Lanka Tourism describes mid-December to mid-January as peak season, so the most popular coastal areas and better hotels usually fill first. Christmas and New Year are the busiest stretch, which means you should book early if your dates are fixed.
Sri Lanka’s official holiday calendar includes Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day in December, and Christmas Day is also a national holiday. The pilgrimage season to Sri Pada traditionally begins on the full moon of December and runs until the full moon of April, which adds a seasonal rhythm to the month.
