Colombo is not a beautiful city and it has never pretended to be one. It is a working port capital that has been rebuilt by whoever held it — Portuguese, Dutch, British, and now a construction boom reclaiming land straight out of the sea. What it offers is not architecture but density: within about a square mile you can pass a Buddhist temple built on a lake, a Dutch hospital converted into restaurants, a Hindu kovil, a mosque striped like a barber pole, and a colonial racecourse.
It is also, comfortably, where you will eat best in Sri Lanka. The city has a serious restaurant culture that most visitors never encounter because they arrive at the airport, get into a vehicle, and drive north.
We generally treat Colombo as a bookend rather than a destination — a night at the start to reset after a long flight, or a night at the end when the flight home leaves at two in the morning. Used that way it earns its place.

Every layer at once
Nowhere else in the country puts Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher and colonial history within walking distance of each other. It is the clearest short explanation of how the island came to be the way it is.

The food
Short eats from a Pettah stall, a proper Jaffna crab curry, and a tasting menu in a restored Dutch warehouse — all in one day, all excellent, and all far better than anything on the tourist coast.

A soft landing
After eleven hours in the air, a night here before the drive inland is the difference between arriving and merely being transported.
One caveat
Three days in Colombo is two days too many. Almost everyone who tells us they were disappointed by the city had allowed too much time for it and ended up in traffic. One night, well used, is close to perfect.

A morning walk through Pettah
The wholesale bazaar district, organised street by street into trades — one for hardware, one for textiles, one entirely for wedding decorations. Loud, unphotogenic and the most alive place in the country.
Gangaramaya and Seema Malaka
A working temple stuffed with two centuries of donated objects, and its serene modernist counterpart floating on the lake — Geoffrey Bawa at his most restrained.
Galle Face Green at dusk
Half a mile of seafront where the entire city goes to fly kites, eat isso wade and stand about in the wind. Go at six, buy something fried, and watch.

The things themselves
Dutch Hospital precinct
The oldest colonial building in the city, now the best-run block of restaurants and shops in it.
Independence Square
A 1948 assembly hall modelled on the Kandyan royal audience chamber, now mostly used by joggers at dawn.
Colombo National Museum
The regalia of the last Kandyan king, taken in 1815 and returned in 1934. Worth an hour.
Wolvendaal Church
Dutch Reformed, 1749, with tombstones of colonial governors set into the floor.
Old Parliament and the Fort
Best seen on foot early, before the heat and the traffic make it unpleasant.

Colombo works in any month. The south-west monsoon between May and September brings heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, and they pass quickly.
Travel tips

The international airport is at Katunayake, roughly 30km north of the city — allow an hour, and considerably more in the evening rush.
- 02
Insist on the meter in a tuk-tuk, or use a ride-hailing app, which is what residents do.
- 03
Traffic between four and seven in the evening is genuinely severe. Plan to be somewhere rather than going somewhere.

About Colombo
For one night, yes — particularly at the end of a trip, when the food and a good hotel are welcome. If your flights make it awkward, skipping it costs you very little, and we will say so.
Fort and Colpetty put you within walking distance of most of what you would want to see. Staying near the airport instead only makes sense for a genuinely early departure.
Yes, including after dark in the central districts. The main hazard is the pavement and the traffic rather than anything else.
