Galle in December: the start of the best months, and how to beat the Christmas rush

Galle in December is a good choice. It is the start of the south-west coast's dry season: the sea calms, the rain eases and the Fort is at its liveliest. The first week or two can still bring afternoon showers, and the last ten days are the busiest of the year, so book Christmas and New Year early.

Some guides call December unreliable on this coast. For the first fortnight, that is half true; after that, December is the beginning of the four best months Galle has. The question is not whether to come, but which half of the month suits you.

Is Galle worth visiting in December?

Yes. December is when the north-east monsoon takes its rain to the other side of the island, and the south-west coast begins its season. Galle is also one of the few places on the coast that is worth visiting even on a wet afternoon, because the Fort is a town and not just a beach.

What December does well

  • The start of the season. Calmer seas, drier days and the coast coming back to life after the monsoon.
  • The Fort. Ramparts at dusk, the lighthouse, the old Dutch church and lanes of shops and cafés that work in any weather.
  • The beaches nearby. Unawatuna and Jungle Beach become swimmable as the sea settles.
  • Whales. The boats off Mirissa, under an hour east, begin their season.
  • Christmas. A warm one, with dinner inside the walls of a 17th-century fort.

What December does not do well: guaranteed swimming in the first week, quiet streets in the last ten days, and last-minute rooms over Christmas and New Year.

What the weather does in December

December is the hinge between the wet months and the dry ones on this coast. Early in the month, the tail of the inter-monsoon can still bring an afternoon thunderstorm, and the sea can stay rough after a windy night. As the month goes on, the showers become rarer, the sea settles, and by Christmas most days are warm, bright and calm.

The pattern is the usual one for the coast: clear mornings, heat building towards lunch, and any cloud arriving in the afternoon. Plan the beach and the boat trips for the morning, and the Fort for the afternoon, when the walls and the old houses give you shade and the light turns gold on the ramparts.

This year, the Department of Meteorology expects El Niño's effects to strengthen from December to February, so it is worth watching the forecast in the weeks before you travel. For the wider picture of how the season changes, see Sri Lanka in December.

In December, Galle is good in the rain and better in the sun. That is more than most beach towns can say.

Early December or late December?

Early December is quieter and cheaper. You get the Fort without the crowds and the best choice of rooms, at the price of a few afternoon showers and a sea that is not always ready for swimming.

Late December is drier, calmer and full. From around 20 December, Sri Lankan families on holiday and visitors from abroad arrive for Christmas and New Year, rates are at their highest of the year, and the best small hotels inside the walls are booked months ahead.

If swimming every day matters most, choose the second half. If peace and value matter most, choose the first.

Inside the Fort, or on the coast?

This is the decision that shapes a Galle stay.

  • Inside the Fort. Small hotels in old merchants' houses, walkable to everything, and at their best in the evening when the day visitors leave. Amangalla, in the restored New Oriental Hotel, is the grandest of them.
  • On the coast. Villas and beach hotels a short drive east, around Unawatuna, Talpe and Koggala, with more space and direct access to the sea.
  • A split stay. One night in the Fort and two on the coast is the shape we use most often, and the one that suits December best.

For families or friends travelling together, a staffed private villa near Galle is a different kind of privacy: your own cook, your own pool and your own hours, with the Fort twenty minutes away.

What to do in and around Galle

  • Walk the ramparts. All the way round, ideally at dusk, ending at the lighthouse as the sun goes down.
  • The Fort's lanes. The old Dutch church, the museums, the shops and cafés; best explored without a plan.
  • Unawatuna and Jungle Beach. The most sheltered swimming nearby, best in the morning.
  • The Peace Pagoda at Rumassala. A short walk above Jungle Beach, with views back over Galle Fort.
  • Koggala Lake. A slow boat among the mangrove islands, a calm alternative on a windy day.
  • Whales from Mirissa. Under an hour away. Stay in Mirissa the night before, as we explain in Colombo to Mirissa.
  • A surf lesson at Weligama. The bay's season starts in about November, and it is one of the best places on the island to learn.

One honest note about the stilt fishermen you will see along the road east of Galle: these days, many fish mainly for photographs, and expect to be paid for them. Agree the price before you raise the camera.

Getting there

Galle is about two to two and a half hours from Colombo or the airport by car, almost entirely on the Southern Expressway. The coast train is slower, at two and a half to three hours, but runs beside the sea for long stretches and stops just outside the Fort walls. In the winter season, Cinnamon Air also flies from the international airport to Koggala, a short drive east of Galle, in about 35 minutes.

We compare the three, and the old coast road, in Colombo to Galle.

Dates and changes for December 2026

  • Early December: the tail of the inter-monsoon. Expect the occasional afternoon storm and a sea that settles day by day.
  • From around 20 December: the start of the Christmas and New Year rush, with the year's highest room rates.
  • Wednesday 23 December: Unduvap Full Moon Poya, a public holiday. Alcohol and meat are not sold.
  • Friday 25 December: Christmas Day.
  • Thursday 31 December: New Year's Eve, the busiest night of the year in the Fort.
  • All month: the winter season for scheduled domestic flights, including Koggala.

What to book first

  1. 01Your hotel inside the Fort, if your dates touch Christmas or New Year. The small hotels have very few rooms.
  2. 02A coast villa or beach hotel, for the second half of a split stay.
  3. 03A car and driver, or train seats on the day the 30-day window opens.
  4. 04The whale boat from Mirissa, with a night there beforehand.
  5. 05Christmas and New Year dinners. Hotels inside the walls fill their tables early.

A December route that ends in Galle

  1. 01Nights 1 to 3: the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya at opening, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa.
  2. 02Nights 4 to 6: Kandy and tea country. Cold, clearing hills as the season turns; we cover them in Nuwara Eliya in December.
  3. 03Nights 7 and 8: Yala or Udawalawe. Down into the dry zone for two game drives.
  4. 04Nights 9 to 11: Galle. One night in the Fort, two on the coast, and the sea at the end of the trip.

This is the shape of our Ceylon Icons journey, and December is the first month of the year it works without compromise, with the coast saved for last.

Who December in Galle suits

  • Couples who want the Fort's evenings and a beach in the morning.
  • Families on a Christmas trip, if the rooms are booked early.
  • First-time visitors finishing a classic route on the coast.
  • Anyone hoping to see whales, with Mirissa an hour away.

Less suited: travellers who want quiet over Christmas, anyone booking late for the last ten days, and beach-only holidays in the first week of the month.

If December is your month, tell us your dates. We will tell you honestly which half of the month suits you, find a room inside the walls before they go, and keep the beach for the mornings. Plan my Sri Lanka trip.
