Colombo to Sigiriya: the best way to get there, and the mistake to avoid
Most people start at the airport, not in Colombo, and that changes the answer. A car is right for almost everyone; here is why, and what the alternatives cost you in time.

The best way from Colombo to Sigiriya is a private car with a driver: about four hours from the airport, and four to five from the city, depending on traffic. Sigiriya has no railway station, and the only faster option is a small plane. Leave early, arrive by lunch, and climb the rock the next morning.
Most travellers are not really starting in Colombo. They land at the international airport at Katunayake, north of the city and already on the right side of it for Sigiriya. Driving into Colombo for a first night and out again the next morning adds hours to what is already the longest day of the trip.
How long is the drive from Colombo to Sigiriya?
About four hours from the airport and four to five from central Colombo, before stops. The route runs on ordinary roads to Mirigama, takes the Central Expressway to Kurunegala, then follows the A6 north through Dambulla to the turn for Sigiriya.
The slow part is the start. The expressway section from Kadawatha to Mirigama, which would take the city exit off ordinary roads, is not due until 2028. Until then, leaving Colombo before the morning traffic saves more time than any choice of route.
On the arrival day, we plan nothing else. Dambulla's cave temples are on the way, but after a long-haul flight they are better seen on the drive south to Kandy, when you are awake enough to look at them.
What are the options, honestly?
- By car. You leave when you want, stop when you need to, and arrive at the hotel door. On the hardest day of the trip, that matters more than anything else on this list.
- By air. Cinnamon Air flies from its own terminal at the international airport to Sigiriya in about 35 minutes, on a schedule in the winter season and by charter otherwise. The aircraft are small, the baggage allowance is tight and the weather has the final say.
- By train. There is no station at Sigiriya. The nearest is Habarana, on the line to Trincomalee and Batticaloa, about half an hour away by road. Book through the official site, as we explain in Sri Lanka train tickets, and expect the whole journey to take longer than driving.
- By bus. Intercity buses run from Colombo to Dambulla, with a local bus or tuk-tuk for the last stretch. It is the cheapest way, and the one we would least like to do with a suitcase after a night flight.
The drive from the airport to Sigiriya is the longest day of most trips. The only sensible thing to add to it is lunch.

Can you do Sigiriya as a day trip from Colombo?
You can, and if you only have a couple of days in Colombo it beats not going at all. But it means eight hours or more in a car for a few hours at the rock, usually in the heat of the day. If Sigiriya is part of a wider trip, sleep there.
What two nights near Sigiriya gives you
- The rock at opening. The gates open at 7am, before the heat and the crowds build.
- Pidurangala. The rock next door, reached through a temple, with the best view of Sigiriya itself, at first light or late afternoon.
- Dambulla's cave temples on a fresh morning rather than a tired afternoon.
- An elephant drive. Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, depending on the season and where the herds are.
What a day trip does not do well: any of the above.
Sigiriya tickets and opening hours
The Central Cultural Fund runs the site, and its ticket counters are open from 7am to 5pm. Foreign visitors' tickets are priced in US dollars and paid in rupees at the day's rate; at the time of writing, an adult from outside South Asia pays about US$35, with the museum included. You can book online through the fund's e-ticketing site and collect the physical ticket at the counter with your receipt.
Pidurangala is managed by the temple at its base and charges a small fee of its own. The last stretch is a short scramble over boulders, so wear proper shoes.
Dates that change the journey
- October and November: the inter-monsoon brings afternoon thunderstorms, so we aim to arrive by lunch. More in Sri Lanka in October.
- From 1 November: Cinnamon Air's winter season, when scheduled flights to Sigiriya run, through to the end of April.
- May 2028: the Kadawatha to Mirigama section of the Central Expressway is due, which should take the slowest part of the drive off ordinary roads.

What to book first
- 01The car and driver, met at arrivals, so the first hour of the trip is someone else's problem.
- 02Two nights near Sigiriya, so the long drive buys you a full day there.
- 03Sigiriya tickets for the morning after you arrive.
- 04The flight, if you are flying. The aircraft are small, so seats are few.
- 05The next leg, usually Kandy by way of Dambulla.
A first three days that works
- 01Day 1: airport to Sigiriya. Lunch, the pool, an early night. Nothing else.
- 02Day 2: Sigiriya at opening, back by late morning, then Pidurangala or an elephant drive in the late afternoon.
- 03Day 3: Polonnaruwa or Dambulla, or on to Kandy with the cave temples on the way.
This is how our Ceylon Icons journey begins, and like every route we design, it bends to your dates and the season.
Who each option suits
- The car suits first-time visitors, families and anyone arriving off a long-haul flight.
- The plane suits short trips in the winter season, with soft, light bags.
- The train suits travellers who want a rail day for its own sake and have time to spare.
- The bus suits budgets that matter more than the hours.
If you are landing soon and Sigiriya is first on the list, tell us your flight time. We will have the car at arrivals, the route planned around the traffic, and the rest of the day left blank on purpose. Plan my Sri Lanka trip.
Last checked 9 October 2026.
