Days worth building a journey around

Each of these earns its place in an itinerary, with the month and the hour it depends on. In Sri Lanka the timing is usually what separates the version people describe as extraordinary from the one they describe as a queue.

    Sigiriya, at the gate when it opens

    Seven in the morning, twelve hundred steps, and the frescoes without a queue behind you.

    The difference between the Sigiriya people describe as extraordinary and the one they describe as a hot, crowded climb is about ninety minutes. At seven the staircases are in shade, the spiral stair to the fresco gallery is empty enough to stop on, and you reach the summit before the rock face starts radiating heat. By nine it is a queue. We also give the water gardens at the base the half hour they deserve — symmetrical, hydraulically sophisticated, still running on gravity fifteen centuries later, and walked past by almost everyone.

    The hill country train, with a reserved seat

    Three hours from Nanu Oya to Ella through tea terraces and cloud, with the doors open.

    The line was built to bring tea down from the highlands and climbs to over eighteen hundred metres at Pattipola, the highest broad-gauge station in Sri Lanka. Reserved seats release thirty days ahead and the good services sell out within hours in high season, so we book them the moment your dates are fixed — second class reserved, right-hand side coming down, where the windows open. Your vehicle takes the luggage round by road and meets you at the far end, which removes the one genuinely difficult part of doing this independently.

    Morning departures have the better light. Cloud sits in the gap through October and November, which is the one window we would steer you away from.

    Evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth

    Drumming in the corridor, and a queue of people who are there to worship rather than to look.

    Possession of the tooth relic has been tied to the right to rule Sri Lanka for over a thousand years, which makes the Sri Dalada Maligawa a functioning seat of legitimacy rather than a monument. Three times a day the shrine opens and Kandyan drummers play in the corridor outside. Go at half past six and stand near the drummers instead of joining the queue — it is the most direct encounter with practising Buddhism a visitor here can have, and nothing about it is arranged for tourism.

    When it works
    Puja at roughly 5.30am, 9.30am and 6.30pm. The evening ceremony is the most atmospheric and the busiest.
    How long
    An hour, plus time to walk the lake beforehand

    Worth knowing. You will not see the relic. It sits inside a series of nested gold caskets and what you file past is the outermost one. Expositions are national events and happen very rarely.

    A working estate, walked with the person who runs it

    The plucking, the withering lofts, the rollers — and why altitude changes all of it.

    Above about twelve hundred metres the leaf grows slowly, and slow growth is what produces the high-grown tea the island is known for. Walking a working estate with a manager rather than a guide gets you the part that is actually interesting: why two leaves and a bud, what the withering lofts are doing overnight, how the grading works, and why the same bush produces a different tea on a different slope. It is also an honest conversation about the labour — most of these estates are worked by the descendants of Tamil families brought from southern India in the nineteenth century.

    Blue whales off the southern shelf

    The continental shelf runs close to shore here, which is why the largest animal that has ever lived passes within a few miles of the beach.

    The seabed south of Mirissa falls away sharply and unusually close to land. That geography concentrates krill, and the krill bring blue whales — along with sperm whales, Bryde's whales and spinner dolphins in the hundreds. The shelf edge is about forty minutes out, which is why this is the most reliable blue whale watching in the Indian Ocean rather than a three-hour crossing. We use a small number of operators who keep their distance, limit approaches and carry a marine biologist.

    When it works
    December to April on the south coast. May to September the same activity moves to Trincomalee on the east, following the monsoon.

    A four to six hour morning, leaving around six

    Worth knowing. Whale watching here has an operator problem. A significant number of boats crowd and chase the animals. Which boat you are on matters more than which month you come, and we would rather you skipped it than went out with one of those.

    Rekawa is a nesting beach rather than a hatchery, and the distinction matters. There are no tanks and no handling: you wait on the sand in the dark until a female comes up, digs, lays and returns to the water, and a ranger explains what is happening in a low voice. It takes as long as it takes. Sri Lanka has a great many roadside turtle operations that keep hatchlings in concrete tanks for the photograph, which is worse than useless for the animals — this is the alternative.

    When it works
    Nesting is year round with a peak between April and September. Always after dark, usually from about eight.
    How long
    An evening, with an unpredictable wait

    Worth knowing. There is a real chance of seeing nothing. It is wild nesting on a public beach, not a scheduled event, and any operator promising a sighting is not running it properly.

    The Galle ramparts, anticlockwise, at dusk

    An hour on a seventeenth-century Dutch wall with the sea on three sides and the whole town out walking.

    Start at the lighthouse and go anticlockwise so you reach Flag Rock as the light goes. The Fort is unusual among walled towns because people still live in it — four hundred houses, a mosque, a Dutch Reformed church floored with the gravestones of colonial officials, schools, and boys throwing themselves off the wall into the sea. Commercial irrelevance preserved it: the British moved the harbour to Colombo and nobody had a reason to knock it down. It costs nothing and it is the best hour on the south coast.

    A private safari at Minneriya

    A wild encounter, not a wildlife show.

    As the dry season draws the reservoir down, grass comes up on the exposed bed and elephants arrive from across the surrounding forest to feed on it — at the peak, one of the largest gatherings of Asian elephants anywhere, twenty minutes from Sigiriya. We run it on a private 4x4 with no fixed circuit, so your driver can sit with a herd for as long as it holds your attention instead of moving on to keep to a schedule. Deer, buffalo, macaques and the park's considerable birdlife fill the hours the elephants do not. Some years the animals favour Kaudulla or Eco Park instead depending on water levels, which is the sort of thing worth having someone locally watching for you.

    When it works
    The gathering peaks roughly July to September; in a wet year it is later and thinner, and we will tell you what it is actually doing before you commit. Outside that window this is a private jeep for the park's wider wildlife rather than the gathering itself, run morning or afternoon.

    Yala, before the convoy forms

    The highest recorded leopard density on Earth, and the highest density of jeeps watching them.

    Yala earns the crowds because the leopard density is real — Block One alone runs close to one animal per square kilometre, the highest recorded anywhere. We book two private drives rather than one: through the gate at half past five, before the shared jeeps form their convoy, and again in the afternoon, when the lagoons fill with crocodile, elephant and wading birds and the second sighting often beats the first. Your own tracker matters as much as the jeep — a shared vehicle stops when someone else's guide decides to move on.

    When it works
    Best February to July. Block One usually closes for drought management in September and October, and we will route you to Block Five or elsewhere in the park if your dates land there.

    Two private drives, gate opening and late afternoon, ideally across two mornings

    Worth knowing. Worth knowing. This is the busiest park in the country. If elephants or genuine quiet matter more to you than the leopard itself, Wilpattu is the better call.

    Wilpattu, where there is no convoy

    Sri Lanka's largest national park, and one of its quietest.

    Wilpattu is larger, wilder and far less driven than Yala — the same leopards and sloth bears, without the queue of jeeps at every sighting. The park takes its name from the willus, natural sand-rimmed lakes that draw animals to their edges, and the extra forest cover means a sighting takes patience rather than luck alone. We send people here instead of Yala, when a crowded park would spoil the point of coming, or as a second day after it, for the version of a Sri Lankan safari that actually feels like one.

    When it works
    Follows the same dry season as Yala, February to July, though a quieter park makes the exact month less critical than it is there.
    How long
    A full day, sometimes two if the first is quiet

    Worth knowing. This is not the park for a guaranteed leopard in an afternoon. What it trades for that certainty is the feeling of having the bush to yourselves, which at Yala in high season you will not get at any price.

    A proper Ayurvedic consultation

    A resident physician takes a history and reads your pulse before anything is prescribed.

    Ayurveda is a diagnostic system before it is a treatment system: two people arriving on the same day with the same complaint should leave with different programmes. That is the whole logic of it, and it is also the test. If you can book specific treatments online in advance, before anyone has met you, it is a spa menu using Ayurvedic vocabulary — enjoyable, but a different product. We use places with a doctor on site every day who will change your programme mid-stay if your body does something unexpected.

    When it works
    Any month. A genuine panchakarma course needs fourteen to twenty-one nights; under seven is an introduction.
    How long
    An hour for the consultation, then a programme built around it

    Worth knowing. During a prescribed course diet is part of the treatment and alcohol is generally out. Worth knowing before booking it alongside a fortnight of wine with dinner.
