The Knuckles
A folded range of cloud forest and terraced villages, and the only place in the country where you can genuinely disappear for a few days.

The Knuckles Massif — Dumbara Kanduvetiya, the mist-laden mountains — is a range of thirty-four peaks north-east of Kandy, named by a British surveyor who thought the ridgeline looked like a clenched fist. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, it holds several distinct forest types stacked by altitude, and it contains an extraordinary density of endemic species.
It is also the least visited part of the highlands, for the straightforward reason that there is nothing here to drive up to and photograph. The Knuckles rewards walking and essentially nothing else. Trails run between villages that have been farming terraced rice and cardamom in these valleys for centuries, through cloud forest hung with moss, past waterfalls that are unmarked on any map.
Meemure, one of the remoter villages, had no road until the 1990s and still has no mobile signal to speak of. Staying there is the closest thing to time travel available on the island.

Real trekking
Not a viewpoint with a car park. Multi-day routes between villages, with proper ascent, river crossings and forest — the only walking of this kind in Sri Lanka.

Endemism
The range holds a remarkable concentration of species found nowhere else, including a number of amphibians and lizards described only in the last few decades.
- 03
Emptiness
You can walk for hours and meet farmers and nobody else. In a country this densely populated, that is genuinely rare.
One caveat
This is not a comfortable destination. Accommodation is basic, the leeches after rain are relentless, and the weather does what it likes. If your idea of a good day involves a pool at the end of it, the Knuckles will be a mistake.

The walk in to Meemure
A village hemmed in by peaks, reached on foot or by a jeep track that only just qualifies. Stay overnight with a family and eat what the valley grows.
Mini World's End
A shorter and far quieter version of the Horton Plains escarpment, usually walked from Deanston with no one else on it.
Cardamom and pepper terraces
Walking through working smallholdings with someone who farms them, and understanding what the terracing is actually for.

Meemure village
Remote, traditional, and only recently connected by anything resembling a road.
Corbett's Gap
A saddle with a view across the whole range, and the usual starting point for longer routes.
Sera Ella and Duwili Ella
Waterfalls reached only on foot, with almost no infrastructure around them.
Montane cloud forest
Moss, epiphytes and permanent damp above about fifteen hundred metres.

The practical part

2 to 3 nights
A single day walk can be done from Kandy, but it misses the point. Two or three nights inside the range is what makes it worth doing at all.
- Best time to visit
January to March, and June to September
The range makes its own weather and is wet in most months — that is what the cloud forest depends on. The drier windows give more reliable footing and better visibility on the ridges.
When not to come. October to December, when trails wash out, leeches are at their worst and river crossings become genuinely risky.
Travel tips

A licensed guide is required for most of the conservation area and is a good idea everywhere else — the paths are unmarked and the cloud comes down fast.
- 02
Leech socks are worth the small indignity. Salt or a little tobacco is the local remedy.

Boots with grip, not trainers. The rock is wet and polished on the popular sections.

There is effectively no mobile signal in the inner valleys. Tell people at home in advance.

Sri Lanka is small, and the best itineraries cluster rather than criss-cross. These are the natural neighbours.
Questions
About The Knuckles
Reasonably. Day routes involve four to six hours of walking with meaningful ascent, often in humidity. The longer village-to-village routes are harder again. There are gentle options from Deanston if you want a taste rather than the full thing.
Easily, and it usually is — the western edge of the range is about two hours from Kandy, which makes it the natural extension for anyone who wants to walk after doing the Cultural Triangle.
After rain, numerous. They are harmless and painless and the bites bleed for a while. With leech socks they are a non-event; without them they are the thing you will remember.
